A Closer Look at Diabetes & Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes can increase your risk for eye conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts. Patients dealing with diabetes long enough are also at the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, which is the primary concern for eye health in people with diabetes.
Diabetic retinopathy develops when the blood vessels in your retina become damaged. As this damage worsens, your vision can become blurry, less sharp, and begin to disappear altogether. When this vision loss occurs, it is essential to book an appointment with our team so we can develop a treatment plan designed for you.
The early stages of diabetic retinopathy may not reveal any symptoms, but as time passes, you may notice increased symptoms such as:
- Eye floaters or dark strings in your field of vision
- Blurry vision
- Altered colors in your vision
- Partial or complete vision loss
The appearance of these symptoms, especially in a patient with diabetes, can signify diabetic retinopathy.
Diagnosing Diabetec Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy can develop when too much sugar in your blood leads to a blockage of the blood vessels that nourish your retina, cutting off its blood supply.
Eidon Fundus Photography
EIDON Fundus Photography consists of using high-resolution images to study your eyes and treat diabetic retinopathy without the use of dilation or optic bleaching.
EIDON can help your eye doctor get a clearer picture and captures multiple angles of the treatment area to assist eye doctors with your treatment. EIDON is a simplified method to walk patients through a comprehensive eye exam.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
The OCT test provides images of your eyes that are taken from a cross-section, so the very fine details of your eyes are visible to your doctor. These images show the thickness of your retina and where the fluid may have leaked into your retinal tissue.
The test usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes and scans your eyes while you rest your head on a support in front of the machine.
Fluorescein Angiography
During a fluorescein angiography test, your eye doctor takes pictures of the inside of your eyes while they are dilated. While your eyes are still dilated, your doctor will then inject a special dye into your arm to help identify which blood vessels have blockages and which ones are leaking blood.
The effects of dilating eye drops can last for 2 to 3 hours following your appointment and cause blurry vision and light sensitivity. Because of this, it’s essential to bring sunglasses and to have someone drive you home afterward.
Treating & Preventing Diabetic Retinopathy
Treatment and prevention for diabetic retinopathy go hand in hand. Treatment will be focused on slowing or stopping the progression of the condition. Your exact treatment options will depend on how severe your condition is and how you are managing your diabetes.
Diabetic Retinopathy Prevention
While you may not always be able to prevent diabetic retinopathy, regular eye exams and control of your blood sugar and blood pressure can help prevent severe vision loss.
Some other prevention methods include:
- Managing your diabetes by making healthy eating and physical activity a part of your daily routine.
- Keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol within healthy ranges.
- Monitoring your smoking habits and consult your doctor about possibly quitting.
- Paying close attention to any vision changes.
Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment
Treatment usually depends on how advanced your diabetic retinopathy is, and your eye doctor will be able to give you some treatment options to consider, such as:
- Focal laser treatment to stop or slow blood leakage from your blood vessels by burning abnormal blood vessels.
- Scatter laser treatment that can shrink abnormal vessels while scarring them, so they are less likely to grow or bulge in the future.
- Prioritizing a healthy lifestyle to manage your diabetes—which goes hand in hand with prevention.

Testimonials
I cannot say enough about how kind and helpful the staff is. The office and exam rooms are clean, comfortable and updated. Dr. Frank Celin was professional, personable and knowledgeable about my eye conditions nystagmus and strabismus. He took his time and treated me with care. The staff spent at least an hour helping me pick out and narrow down frames from a great, selection. After trying a few different ophthalmologists over the years, I feel very comfortable in Dr. Celin’s care and will be going back.

My experiences have always been more than anticipated. The staff and doctors continue to do more than ever expected. Interested in a patients view/treatment at their offices and exceptional frames. I have family from out of town who book their appointments here because they feel their care is in best hands from lasik info and contacts to their frames and lenses. Still the best!

I switched from Dr. Prazer (and his own practice) to Dr. Caitlin McCauley when I had to change insurance several years ago. I was reluctant to switch, but I soon found that Dr. McCauley was just as wonderful and knowledgeable.

Everyone is so nice in their offices. The other day I kept the office person on the phone for the longest time trying to find the best appt time. She never even flinched! I felt so bad wasting her time but she made me feel so comfortable. Exceptional selection of glasses, and seriously sincere staff and physicians. I would recommend them to anyone. I chose this office after a bad experience with a local competing office and I am quite please with my choice!

They have 3 local offices was extensive hours. They can even accommodate patients on evenings and weekends! I saw Dr. Robert McCauley. I found him to be very pleasant and knowledgeable. The waiting room is very clean and brightly lit. As I went in the evening it was nice and quiet. It almost doesn’t matter though. Both times that I went I was taken promptly and even a little early! I only went for my contacts so I don’t have any comments regarding their frames department, but I will be sure to come back once I need new glasses.

I have been coming here for years and not once has any visit been below fantastic service. My appointments have been on time and I’m usually in and out within an hour. I once tried to visit a new eye doctor where I worked out of convenience and it was a terrible mistake. No matter what section of town I live in, I will always make it a mission to keep my business here.

This is the best most thorough place you can go for eye care. The selection of glasses frames is excellent and you can be sure you are getting a thorough eye exam. The staff are friendly professional and we’ll informed.

Beyond helpful and patient. Dr. Lindsay is amazing and was able to find a pair of contacts for me to wear after 10+ years of being stuck wearing only glasses. The entire staff, and Dennis in particular, are always there for you if you ever need anything. A++ service.
