Treatment for Nearsightedness

As your child grows and develops, so do their eyes. Their vision is essential to how they learn and develop, and the prevalence of nearsightedness, known as myopia, can affect their success both in and outside of the classroom.

Myopia affects nearly 30% of Americans, and that number is projected to increase by the year 2050. Because of its growing concern, we’re passionate about providing personalized control solutions for our patients.

Regularly scheduled eye exams for your little one are an important step in lowering the risk of vision complications in the future. Book your child’s next eye exam today.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia is commonly referred to as nearsightedness because your near vision remains clear while objects in the distance appear blurry. It occurs when the eye becomes too elongated, or the cornea has too much curvature, causing light entering the eye to improperly focus in front of the retina.

Typically, myopia is detected in childhood as the eye grows and develops. Regularly scheduled comprehensive eye exams can ensure your child’s eyes are working to their full potential and monitor for signs of myopia or other refractive errors.

Methods to control myopia are available to help slow its progression and help your child achieve visual success.

Myopia Management Solutions

Controlling your child’s myopia is essential to the health and future of their vision. If myopia is left untreated, it can lead to further sight-threatening issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, or retinal detachment.

After assessing your child’s unique eyes and understanding their individual needs and lifestyle, our doctors will develop a customized myopia control plan. Myopia management methods can include specialty contact lenses and eye drops.

MiSight 1 Day Lens

MiSight 1 day lenses by CooperVision are single-use contact lenses that provide the wearer with clear vision while simultaneously slowing the elongation of the eye. They work by using 2 zones, a treatment zone that creates myopic defocus and a correction zone that corrects the refractive error.

These contact lenses can be worn throughout the day by children as young as 8 years of age.

Corneal refractive therapy (CRT) is an overnight, noninvasive myopia control solution. It involves wearing rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that are designed to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep.

The reshaping of the cornea will provide you and your child with temporary clear vision during the day, eliminating the need for glasses or other corrective lenses.

Low-dose atropine eye drops have been shown to be an effective solution for myopia progression by relaxing the eye’s focusing mechanisms. The dosage prescribed will depend on your child’s unique needs.

Atropine eye drops are usually administered at bedtime.
