Diagnosing Diabetec Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy can develop when too much sugar in your blood leads to a blockage of the blood vessels that nourish your retina, cutting off its blood supply.

Eidon Fundus Photography

EIDON Fundus Photography consists of using high-resolution images to study your eyes and treat diabetic retinopathy without the use of dilation or optic bleaching.

EIDON can help your eye doctor get a clearer picture and captures multiple angles of the treatment area to assist eye doctors with your treatment. EIDON is a simplified method to walk patients through a comprehensive eye exam.

The OCT test provides images of your eyes that are taken from a cross-section, so the very fine details of your eyes are visible to your doctor. These images show the thickness of your retina and where the fluid may have leaked into your retinal tissue.

The test usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes and scans your eyes while you rest your head on a support in front of the machine.

During a fluorescein angiography test, your eye doctor takes pictures of the inside of your eyes while they are dilated. While your eyes are still dilated, your doctor will then inject a special dye into your arm to help identify which blood vessels have blockages and which ones are leaking blood.

The effects of dilating eye drops can last for 2 to 3 hours following your appointment and cause blurry vision and light sensitivity. Because of this, it’s essential to bring sunglasses and to have someone drive you home afterward.

Treating & Preventing Diabetic Retinopathy

Treatment and prevention for diabetic retinopathy go hand in hand. Treatment will be focused on slowing or stopping the progression of the condition. Your exact treatment options will depend on how severe your condition is and how you are managing your diabetes.

Diabetic Retinopathy Prevention

While you may not always be able to prevent diabetic retinopathy, regular eye exams and control of your blood sugar and blood pressure can help prevent severe vision loss.

Some other prevention methods include:

  • Managing your diabetes by making healthy eating and physical activity a part of your daily routine.
  • Keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol within healthy ranges.
  • Monitoring your smoking habits and consult your doctor about possibly quitting.
  • Paying close attention to any vision changes.

Treatment usually depends on how advanced your diabetic retinopathy is, and your eye doctor will be able to give you some treatment options to consider, such as:

  • Focal laser treatment to stop or slow blood leakage from your blood vessels by burning abnormal blood vessels.
  • Scatter laser treatment that can shrink abnormal vessels while scarring them, so they are less likely to grow or bulge in the future.
  • Prioritizing a healthy lifestyle to manage your diabetes—which goes hand in hand with prevention.
